Buses remain the cheapest form of transportation between most major cities in the Northeastern States. Here are three bus lines that offer low cost tickets.

When traveling between cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., budget travelers have several bus options that can cost as little as $1 for a ticket.

The following three are reliable, clean and offer luxury amenities for a bargain price.

Bolt Bus

In 2011, their routes include Baltimore, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. They used to have a more expansive routing system, but have appeared to have narrowed it down to the most popular cities.

Reasons Bolt Bus is so popular include $1 starting fares (which can go up to $25 or so, depending on how many seats are left), on-board free wi-fi and outlet plug-ins for electronic devices. Bolt also has a customer loyalty program that gives a free one-way ticket with every eight trips taken with the bus line.

Megabus

In 2011, this bus line operates to a bigger network of cities than Bolt Bus, including many campus areas, making this a great bus line for college budget travelers.

Megabus also offers $1 starting fares (again, these increase depending upon how many seats are left for that trip) and free wi-fi, as well.

The discount bus line also operates to many cities in the Midwest U.S., from Minneapolis to Tennessee, but for some reason they do not connect any of their East Coast routes to the Midwest ones. The bus line would be so much more budget traveler friendly if they did connect the routes.

Tripper Bus

This small bus line only travels between Bethesda, Maryland; Arlington, Virginia; and New York City, but it's a great and inexpensive way to get from the Washington, D.C., area to the Big Apple.

Fares start at $1, the earlier a person books, and go up depending on demand for seats on that trip. The maximum price each way is $25. Plus, travel four times and get the fifth trip free.

While onboard, enjoy free Wi-Fi and electrical outlets to plug the tech stuff into.

Not only do these three discount bus lines offer less expensive ways to travel in the Northeast states, especially between New York City and Washington, D.C., but with free Wi-Fi and more, it's actually a rather pleasant experience. Not to mention convenient, since one doesn't have to worry about parking or other issues that arise when trying to drive in these large metropolitan areas.
