Millions flock to the grand city of Paris, France, every year. Most think it costs a lot to see all the sights, but by using the tips below, it is possible to sight-see on a budget in this beautiful city.
Use Public Transportation to Tour Paris
Paris has a decent public transportation system that's less frustrating to use than driving a car and less expensive than taking taxis everywhere.
If you are planning to use public transportation a lot, buy a ParisVisite card ahead of arriving. Valid for 1, 2, 3 or 5 days, it can produce quite a bit of savings, by offering unlimited travel on the bus, metro, tramway and RER networks in Paris and its suburbs. It also comes with a booklet offering additional discounts around the city.
Casual public transportation users should consider individual metro tickets, but buy a carnet (stack of 10) at once to at least get some savings.
Save on Eiffel Tower Admission
There's no denying the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower is breathtaking. It also costs almost 15 euro (at the time of this article) to take the elevator all the way up. If the sightseeing budget is tight, save money and get a bit of exercise by walking up the stairs to the first or second level. The views are still stunning, but the price is less than half that of the elevator.
Enjoy Free Museum Access
One of Paris' many cultural charms is the long list of museums with free admission every day. But even the most well-known museums offer free admission on the first Sunday of the month. There is also Museum Night (La Nuit des Musées) in May when visitors can get a reprieve from entrance fees. Just be aware that lines may be very long on these days, especially at the more famous museums.
Museum Hop for Less with the Paris Museum Pass
Can't time the visit for a free admission day? It's still possible to save money by purchasing the Paris Museum Pass. Available in 2, 4 or 6 day increments, it gives free and unlimited access to over 60 museums, including the Louvre, and major monuments, along with priority entry.
Protect Belongings from Pickpockets
Paris is notorious for pickpockets, and the best way to save money is to not have it stolen. Keep wallets well hidden. Never keep them in a pants back pocket or suit jacket pocket. If carrying a purse, make the strap short enough to tuck under the arm and keep the opening facing the body, if it has a flap.
By using these tips, it's possible to see more and do more on a visit to Paris, without spending more money.
