Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world. It can also be one of the most expensive.
There are ways to save money, however, when visiting this beautiful French city. Ways that don't require great sacrifice or much of an effort.
Travel During Spring and Fall Months
The months of April, May, September or October are considered shoulder season for travel to France. The weather is still nice, but rates are lower and crowds are smaller. Summer months are peak travel periods so it can be very expensive to visit Paris then.
Live Like a Parisian
If visiting for a week or more, considering renting a flat (apartment) or studio. Not only will the rental price probably be less than a hotel, but there will be a kitchen to use to save money on meals.
Eat Like a Parisian
Beautiful day out? Enjoy an al fresco picnic at the Eiffel Tower. Simply stop at a bakery or open air market to pick up some bread, cheese, fruit and a bottle of wine, and enjoy a cheap meal on the public green spaces around the base of the tower.
In fact, open air markets are not only a great source of fresh, low cost food, but a great way to meet local Parisians and get more tips and pointers for things to do in the city.
Also skip the bottled water and opt for tap. The savings will be roughly 5 euros per person.
Tour with a Local Parisian
To really see why Paris is such a beloved city among travelers, one needs to get off the tourist path. One of the best ways to do that is by using the Paris Greeter Program.
Volunteer citizens offer to show visitors around, sharing the knowledge of a city that only a local would know. It's free, but a small donation is welcome to help keep the program running. At the very least, buy the greeter lunch or offer a tip for a job well done.
Take the Train from the Airport
A taxi from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Central Paris will cost about 65 euros. Visitors who are traveling light (one or two suitcases maximum) can save a lot by taking the RER train instead. The transport time is about the same, but the cost (at the time of this article) was under 10 euros.
Shoot Photos for Souvenirs
Why buy postcards to remember a visit to Paris when it's just as easy to snap photos of your own? It's really hard to take a bad photo of the city. Back home, print out the best ones and give as gifts to friends and family instead of buying expensive souvenirs.
Fill the Schedule with Free or Low Cost Things to Do
It is possible to sight-see in Paris on a budget. The trick is to visit the free museums or attractions, or schedule visits on days when admission is waived. Even The Louvre is free once a month.
